Betty Page: Bondage Queen

Chances are, if you're reading this review, you already know about Betty Page. But just in case: Ms. Page was a would-be actress and photographer's model who appeared in some very popular fetish photos by Irving Klaw in the 50's; retiring when Klaw ran afoul of the Kefauver Commission, she retained a certain amount of fame through the 80's, when she blossomed into a full-blown icon, due in no small part to Dave Steven's comic book The Rocketeer.

Betty Page: Bondage Queen is simply a DVD transfer of The Classic Films of Irving Klaw volumes 1 and 2, videotapes published by London Enterprises back in 1984. As such, be warned that in each volume, you will going through over thirty minutes of other models before you get to any Betty footage - she's only in a third of the 113 minute running time.

Given that this is a transfer from an existing VHS tape, the pictures looks as good as black and white film loops from the 40's-50's could be expected to look without some major restoration work. To their credit, Cult Epics has allotted the majority of the 13 chapter stops to the Betty Page segments, so one can easily skip over the non-Betty material.

A photo gallery provides a mere 20 photos of Ms. Page in various fetish gear; and 'A Brief History of Fetishism and S/M' is precisely that, six pages of scant information. Two other listings off the DVD's title page take you to ads for two other Cult Epic DVDs, Betty Page: Pin-Up Queen, and 100 Girls by Bunny Yeager.

It would be easy to get sucked in with the disc's promise of 'exclusive commentary' by Betty Page, coupled with a later listing of 'audio commentary' under EXTRAS. Caveat Emptor: the Betty commentary is limited to four text screens, which are informative enough to make you hungry for more. The promised audio commentary is the same voiceover material from the previously released videotapes, supplied by Shirley Thompson.
